The annual spring Arts Festival has become a much anticipated and celebrated event in the Willington calendar. The month long event aims to bring a wide range of cultural experiences to students, parents and the wider Willington community. Poetry, literature, the visual arts, music and drama are explored in many forms in a mixture of performance and workshop based events.
Past events have included:
- evenings with Andrew Motion, Stephen Fry and Nicky Spence
- literature workshops with authors Malorie Blackman, Geraldine McCaughrean, Brian Patten and Roger McGough.
- photography and model making workshops.
- performances by poets, puppeteers, choirs and orchestras.
- outings to local theatres and places of cultural interest, including the Wimbledon Islamic Centre.
The events are incorporated into the daily life of the school and provide a unique opportunity to celebrate London’s rich artistic life.
School Production
A major component of the Arts Festival is the school production. Open auditions are held for the senior school pupils giving them the opportunity to perform in a collaborative piece with the Music and Drama departments.
The 2006/2007 production was ‘The Ballad of Salomon Pavey’ by guest director Jeremy James Taylor. The cast of thirty brought to life the story of a young boy from the King’s Chapel whose gift for playing the part of old men at the royal court was a portent for his own untimely demise. The Elizabethan piece combined period music, elaborate costumes and traditional staging. The boys worked enthusiastically to produce a spellbinding show, the final night of which was staged in the Great Hall at Hampton Court Palace.
