English
The English department aims:
- To develop the desire and ability to communicate (both verbally and in writing).
- To instil in pupils an appreciation of the various branches of language and literature.
- To stimulate curiosity, interest and enjoyment in English Language and English Literature.
Theatre trips are organised for every year group and we invite many theatre companies to school regularly to perform shows and run workshops with groups of children. During the Arts Festival, many authors, poets and storytellers visit the school to inspire the children by sharing their work. There are also chances for the children to enter poetry, public speaking and debating competitions.
We use National Curriculum guidelines, together with the Common Entrance Board syllabus.
Our aims are broadly in line with those of the National Curriculum:
- Speaking & Listening – At1
- To develop the abilities to communicate effectively and speak Standard English; listen closely and with understanding.
- To communicate accurately, sensitively, effectively and appropriately, in a variety of speaking and listening situations, with a clear awareness of audience and purpose.
- Reading – At2
- To develop the ability to read accurately, widely and fluently, encountering texts of increasing complexity, especially those central to our literary heritage but not neglecting the literature of other cultures and traditions.
- To develop the habit of reading and encourage pupils to value reading as a pleasure and as an important skill for life.
- Writing (including Spelling, Grammar, and Handwriting) – At3
- To develop the ability to convey meaning and feeling effectively in writing standard English.
- To write clearly, confidently and fluently, in an appropriate style, in any given context.
