The Foundation Stage
A multi-sensory approach to learning.
We have two small parallel classes where the boys are introduced to the six areas of learning:
- Social, personal and emotional development
- Communication, language and literacy
- Mathematical development
- Knowledge and understanding of the world
- Physical development
- Creative development
They are taught in these areas using a multi-sensory approach and are encouraged to progress at their own pace in a happy and relaxed atmosphere. Specialist staff teach PE, Drama, Music and French.
There are 3 groups in each class and each day the groups rotate so that they have the experience of a written or mathematical task, an art activity and free play. Free play is very important in the Foundation Stage as they learn to share, take turns and operate as part of a group. They go out into the playground 3 times a day. Lunch is eaten in the classroom to begin with and then in the main hall.
During the year various outings are planned which include going to Richmond Park, The Wimbledon Windmill, The Rangers on Wimbledon Common, Wimbledon Library and the local fire station. Walks around the local environment are also planned.
We offer after school clubs for the Foundation Stage, for example, Playball. Spanish and Yoga clubs are held at lunch time. Boys can also learn a musical instrument, through the Music Department’s peripatetic tuition scheme.
