History

History at Willington School aims to promote historical knowledge, the use of transferable skills, and an understanding of how societies develop and the effect that this has on our lives today.

Children are encouraged to develop their historical knowledge through a wide variety of teaching strategies: traditional reading and written tasks; project work; group and whole class discussion; and practical experiences, such as making models, posters and so on.

From the Foundation Stage to Year 3 History is taught by the class teacher, covering topics such as the history of toys; Henry VIII and his wives; the Egyptians, Ancient Greece and Explorers. From Year 4 onwards, specialist teaching further develops this and the aim is to give as diverse an experience of the subject as possible before starting preparation for the Common Entrance examination in Year 7.

The History Room, used by most senior classes, is bright, welcoming and well-resourced. Trips over the past few years have included the Roman villa at Bignor; Cogges Farm in Oxfordshire; Rochester and Bodiam Castles; Canterbury Cathedral; the Houses of Parliament; the London Dungeon; the Golden Hinde; the Imperial War Museum; the Museum of London; and the British Museum.
