Mathematics
“Our aim is to develop the boys’ enjoyment and understanding of mathematics.”
Mathematics is taught right from the Foundation Stage up to Year 8 and the teaching is initially based on the National Numeracy Strategy. Throughout the school emphasis is placed on oral work and practical activities, putting learning into context. Boys are taught in their form groups up to Year 4, at which point they are split into ability groups to enable each boy to receive the appropriate level of support.
In the Junior Department, emphasis is placed on the acquisition of sound number skills, which underpin the increasingly complex techniques explored in the Senior Department. Our aim is to develop the boys’ enjoyment and understanding of mathematics as well as to prepare them successfully for the Common Entrance Examination.
The school’s expansion will enable us to develop the use of ICT in the mathematics department, which will further enhance the boys’ experience of the subject at Willington.
