Scholarships
The Governors offer a number of scholarships each December for boys showing intellectual promise. Subject to satisfactory continuing performance, these awards can continue in operation throughout a boy’s Willington career to the end of Year 8.
Scholarships are available at two separate ages:
- Year 2 boys going into Year 3
- Year 6 boys going into Year 7
Year 3 awards are open to internal and external candidates; Year 7 awards to external candidates only.
If candidates of sufficient merit present themselves, the school offers:
- For entry in Year 3, up to 6 scholarships of a maximum value of 50% of basic school fees
- For entry in Year 7, up to 4 scholarships of a maximum value of 50% of basic school fees
Subject to means testing, these awards can be augmented by way of a bursary, of up to 50% of basic school fees, so that the total maximum value of scholarships for candidates in Years 3 and 7 can be 50% + 50% = 100% of basic school fees. A 100% award will cover the basic school fees in total, but will not include extras.
Annual reviews of a scholar’s performance will be based on assessment grades, twice-yearly reports and the Head’s recommendation to Governors. Similarly, those seeking bursaries for their sons will need to demonstrate annually a genuine need for financial support.
Tests are held at the school early in December of each year.
Candidates for both year groups eligible for scholarships are admitted to the Tests by means of an application form to be returned completed to the School Office.
There is no entry fee for candidates applying for scholarships, but parents of candidates should complete a simple Application Form available from the School Office.
A school prospectus, including current fee levels, and other information including arrangements for current tests, can be obtained from the School Office.
