The School

In 2010, Willington will celebrate its 125th anniversary. Throughout its history, Willington has been independent and a preparatory school for boys. We take pupils from age 4 in Reception and they normally leave us at the end of Year 8 when they are 13.

For over 100 years, Willington was in Putney and we moved to our present site in 1990. The school has been a charitable trust since 1961.

Willington sees a clear position for itself in the group of Wimbledon independent schools. While we are, of course, keen to promote the best academic standards we can, we do not see this pursuit to be exclusive of a wide approach to prep school education which involves the boys in a host of sporting and cultural opportunities. While we have lots of new facilities, Willington is essentially a traditional old-fashioned prep school.

There is a great stress here on individuality, but within a disciplined environment. We want our boys to be socially adept, confident and, not least, nice to each other and to the people around them. The school is founded on Christian values and is very much a family school, where parents are encouraged to participate in the day-to-day running of school life.

Following the opening of the Johnson Building in 1999, which houses Art and History specialist rooms, the school in 2007 embarked on a major upgrading of our Worcester Road site and the rebuilding programme has created new centres for Maths, Science and Languages, a small studio theatre and much improved Music provision. Another major recent improvement has been the transfer of all team sports to our own playing fields at Drax at the end of Preston Road.
