ACTING HEADMASTER'S BLOG
Week commencing 5th February 2018
It has been a chilly old week in SW19, but not on the scale that awaits the skaters, skiers and sliders in Pyeongchang, South Korea for the Winter Olympics. The mercury has plummeted through the floor there and the US Ski Team has even invested in special heated jackets for today’s Opening Ceremony to stave off hypothermia!
The House Rugby Competition has certainly warmed us up this week. Across the board, from Years 1-8, there has been a wonderful display of enthusiasm, endeavour and sportsmanship by all the boys (pictured). Thanks to the Sports Department for putting on such a great event and to parents and grandparents for braving the cold to come and watch. Congratulations to Lancelot for lifting the trophy aloft at Drax this afternoon.
During their Computing lesson on Tuesday, Year 7 teamed up remotely via video link with Thompson Reuters. They gained an insight into taking an idea and making it into a viable ‘app’ and listening and responding to needs and performing market research. And, on the theme of Computing, my thanks to Mr Currie for giving an insightful and hugely important Assembly to coincide with Safer Internet Day on Wednesday.
In other news this week, some of our Senior musicians enjoyed a great time at Epsom College at the annual Strings Day (pictured), while boys in Years 7 and 8 ventured down the road to the HMV Curzon Cinema (pictured) to watch ‘Journey’s End’, which happens to be a set text in the curriculum. As they were leaving the cinema, two gentlemen approached Mrs Hamidon to say they were both war veterans, who had served in the East Surrey Regiment; the same regiment that R.C. Sherriff, the playwright, had served in, and the same regiment portrayed in the play/film. They said they had been sincerely impressed by the conduct of the boys and by the respect they had shown in attending the screening. We know how polite and respectful our boys are, but it is always great when members of the public acknowledge this when they are out and about. A great way to send us into the Half Term break!
Whatever your plans, have an enjoyable week.
